The Plan

“I need a plan”. Coaches hear these words all the time. It makes sense. You know the old saying- not having a plan is a plan to fail. So yes, of course, I agree. Make a plan. But here’s the rub. The critical component of this “plan making” is who you put in charge of the plan design. Will it be the narrow-thinking, conventional wisdom driven and “this is the best I can do” part of you? Or will it be crafted by the thoughtful, curious, trusting and trustworthy side of yourself?

A plan made by the former is often a setup for procrastination, self-judgment, failure and same old , same old. The resulting disappointment is often directed either at the outside world ( this economy is awful) or worse yet, at the inside world ( I don’t have what it takes). This is a painful cycle. It starts with great enthusiasm and resolve but often ends in ineffective execution, discouragement and you’ve seen this movie before, the search for a new plan.

There is an alternative. Phase one- self excavation. Uncover all those precious parts of self that have been blotted out by getting by, getting more, staying safe and following instructions. What do I love to do? What’s important to me? Where do I get stuck? When do I shine (inside and out)? Phase two- align vision with practical steps. Can I see the path from point now to point then? Almost? Good enough. Start taking steps. Phase three- Let the game come to you. Run into roadblocks? No problem. This plan was forged with the essential ingredients of truth and belief in self and therefore possesses the foundational integrity required to survive and flourish on changing circumstances. Phase four- take stock. Look at where you have come, what you have learned and how you are different. Express gratitude, celebrate, and look for someone else to help. That’s it.

Will it work, you say?! Plan on it.
